James Franco explains why he’s doing General Hospital, sort of

On Friday night, James Franco traveled even farther north than Columbia's campus for Dia's Fall Gala at the Hispanic Society on 155th Street. He showed up halfway through cocktail hour with his grandmother. He yawned a lot. Vulture managed to get a few minutes with him, during which he told us a little about his upcoming guest roles on 30 Rock and General Hospital.
Where are you coming from?
I was filming 30 Rock today. It was very fun. I worked with Tina Fey a little bit over the summer on the movie Date Night and I'm assuming she liked the experience and that was why I was asked to do 30 Rock. I play myself but a very strange version. I don't think it has anything to do with who I actually am.
And you're also doing General Hospital. Why?
I really don't know the difference between [soap operas]. The one difference is that General Hospital has developed this whole organized-crime thread.

Scozzafava: 'My Name's A Verb Now', 'We're Going To Work Against' Far-Right Republicans

In a Washington Post profile of the erstwhile Republican candidate for New York's 23rd district, Dede Scozzafava marveled at her new fame -- and warned her party against pushing out the moderates.
"My name's a verb now," she told the Post. Indeed, the nearly unpronounceable "scozzafavaed" made its way into the user-generated Urban Dictionary after she withdrew from the election amid sinking poll numbers and a nationally-supported conservative candidate.
She also issued a warning to the Republican party.

Donald Trump is teaming up with The Apprentice bad girl Omarosa, for a dating competition called Omarosa’s Ultimate Merger in which the TV villain attempts to find love out of 12 business-minded bachelors.
Donald, 63, will appear onscreen advising his former protogée on the suitors for the Bachelor-style show made for cable network, TV One, reports Variety.
“Omarosa was a great personality on The Apprentice that was watched by over 40 million people as it became the No. 1 show on TV,” Donald says.
“Omarosa is smart, witty and difficult, but all of those qualities will make for some very interesting entertainment.”
Omarosa’s Ultimate Merger is being shot in Las Vegas at the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

A huge rise in the number of children calling to report sexual abuse by women has been revealed by Childline.
Over the past five years, the charity says the number of such calls has risen five times faster than youngsters reporting abuse by a man.
Of 16,094 children who called Childline about sex abuse last year, 2,142 told of abuse by a woman, up 132% on 2004-5.
Men still account for the majority of child abuse claims, but the NSPCC said female sex abuse was under-reported.
This is because there is a reluctance or unwillingness on the part of professionals to acknowledge or identify sexual abuse by females, the charity suggested.
The research follows the recent high-profile case of nursery worker Vanessa George, who abused children in her care. She was a member of an internet paedophile ring which included another woman.

The original marriage certificate issued to Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley on May 26, 1994 in the Dominican Republic, where the couple embarked on their brief but highly publicized life together, will be sold in an important multi-estate sale slated for the weekend of Jan. 22-24, 2010, by Philip Weiss Auctions. The certificate was signed by both Jackson and Presley.
“Anything relating to Michael Jackson is of extreme interest right now because of his untimely death and the release of the movie,” said Philip Weiss, “but when you have an item that combines his name and legend with the Presley name and legend, their marriage certificate no less, with both of their signatures on it, you’ve got something that’s almost impossible to predict what it will bring at auction.”
That same weekend, another slice of music and pop culture memorabilia will be sold by Philip Weiss Auctions: a large photo of the Beatles, signed by all four members of the group, personalized to the late pianist Liberace. In their lighthearted way, the Beatles signed it “to Liber-Archie” as a play on words. Also in the auction will be many other pieces of authentic signed Beatles-related memorabilia.

She’s the incredible shrinking Kelly Osbourne! The reality show contestant, who made the final five on Dancing with the Stars, revealed Monday night she’s lost 20 lbs from taking part in the grueling series.
Kelly (who confessed exclusively to OK! in late October that she dropped 14 lbs) is even slimmer as she enters week eight of the hit ABC show. “I think it’s almost 20 lbs now,” Kelly said. “I’m fucking starving right now!”
Her dance partner and close friend, Louis Van Amstel, said the weight loss is even more dramatic than that: “Her muscles have gotten stronger, too, they become heavier. So, even if it might have been just 20, it really feels like 30 or 35 to me ’cause she’s fading in front of my eyes.”
Louis said when he looks at DWTS clips from just four weeks ago, he can tell the difference in Kelly’s size. Backstage after the show, he told her: “I saw the samba and I’m like, you’re not even the same person.”
Kelly, 25, recently told OK! in addition to dancing, she and Louis are attending Pilates classes together to stay in shape. And she’s also been following a healthy diet and giving up her favorite sugary sodas.

12h27 : Arrival of the smiling stars Kristen is stunning with her white dress, fans are crazy, the atmosphere is incredible. It’s completely nuts out there with Rob, Kristen, Taylor and Chris Weitz. Pattinson is even embarrassed to trigger off all this attention.
12h46 : Kristen answers the 1st question. Rob is exhausted, he keeps rubbing his eyes ans once again he is amazed by the crowd who is in front of him… and who can’t help watching him ! Twilight, it’s not just a movie, it’s a phenomenon !
12h53 : Robert jokes and avoids half the questions giving them to Kristen ! The mix of shyness and humor is really cute but we’d love to have information !
12h59 : Robert Pattinson’s favorite vampire film ? “mine”, he says smiling. The audience is laughing.
13h01 : According to the actor ,New Moon has a different mood. Very different from the 1st movie.
13h07 : Kristen agrees. She thinks the 2nd movie can be seen if you haven’t sen Twilight.
13h10 : End of the press conference. For the fans it was too short ! The exclusive news will be given another time. What a pity…

Joss Stone has sparked outrage after claiming that soft drugs are safer than alcohol. The singer says she counts cannabis, which is a Class B drug, as “more of a herb”.
She told Star magazine: “I smoke weed, but I don’t think it’s really a drug. It’s more of a herb. I think everyone smokes weed and people who say they don’t are lying!”
“Weed has been given this evil stamp, but how is it dangerous? It’s going to make you laugh your arse off? You might go to sleep? I think alcohol is much more harmful. People beat the fuck out of each other on alcohol.”
And the 22-year-old was quick to add that she has no qualms with being honest about her drug use.
She added: “I’m very honest and I’ve been punished for that over and over again. Every time I say what I think I get shit for it. But that won’t stop me from being an honest person.”
But Joss’s comments have outraged the head of the National Drugs Prevention Alliance, who said the interview could be “damaging”.
He said: "People like Joss Stone should keep their mouths shut about things like this. It is terribly damaging and she clearly hasn't considered the wider effects of the drug.”
And despite her views, the singer has also blasted fellow star Amy Winehouse – who has battled addictions to heroin and crack cocaine - for her drug consumption.
She said: “I think it’s stupid. Amy’s music is beautiful, her lyrics are fucking great, but she has to start loving the music more than she loves herself and the drugs. You’ve got to have a lack of intelligence to do that to yourself.”
“Amy’s not a kid, she makes her own decisions. If you choose to live in London, go to clubs every night… it’s going to take a toll.”

Kourtney Kardashian is chomping at the bit to give birth to her baby boy -- and to get thin again.
After the eight-months pregnant star admitted last week that she is "over the red carpet being pregnant" and has gained 26 pounds, sister Kim admits that Kourtney is "having a hard time" accepting the added pounds of pregnancy.
"Kourtney is going crazy," Kim told Usmagazine.com at the opening of Westfield Culver City shopping center in Culver City, Calif. Saturday. "She feels so big right now. She's just ready to have the baby."
Kourtney's son with boyfriend Scott Disick is due sometime in December.
"I think once you get to that final month," Kim said, "you are just so anxious to have the baby."
At the moment, Kim and sister Khloe are both dieting with the QuickTrim product -- and their with-child sister is jealous. "She is anxious to get on the same plan as us," Kim, 28 said. "She sees a definite difference in weight loss from us. I feel like I am in the best shape of my life right now."
As for Khloe, the newlywed Kardashian still has a ways to go: Thursday she revealed that she's gained five pounds since her wedding. "I stopped my QuickTrim diet for a little bit around the time I met Lamar [Odom]," she admitted. "I was so in love, and I was at my perfect weight, and I didn't want to do it anymore."

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of basketball's all-time greatest players, announced Tuesday morning that he has cancer. The sports legend made the public disclosure nearly a year after being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.
"Having lost one of my closest friends to a different, highly aggressive form of leukemia, I knew how serious my diagnosis was," said Abdul-Jabbar, 62. "My own life expectancy became a question mark."
Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring in 1989. He was diagnosed with CML in December 2008 and is being treated with a medicine that targets the abnormal protein that causes his leukemia. With treatment, Abdul-Jabbar, who currently is a coach with the Lakers, is expected to live a full, active life.
The intensely private Abdul-Jabbar, a father of five, said he came forward after learning many patients don't regularly take their medication and skip appointments to the doctor.
"I'm telling my story to encourage fellow patients to take charge of their health," he said. "Work closely with your doctor, monitor your disease and, above all, take your medicine."

Virginia set to execute 'Beltway sniper'
By Jeanne Meserve and Mike M. Ahlers, CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- John Allen Muhammad, the mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks that terrorized the suburbs of the nation's capital, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Tuesday evening at a state prison near Jarratt, Virginia.
Muhammad continued to profess his innocence during two lengthy trials -- including one featuring testimony from young accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo -- and in several years of legal appeals.
He repeated his assertion that he was an innocent victim of racial bias in a letter to the federal court released last week by his attorneys. Muhammad charged that police and prosecutors "lied to the American people" about his case and withheld evidence that could clear him.

I was a freshman in high school living in central Virginia when this happened. My mom and sister were stuck on highway coming back from King's Dominion when the shooting at the Ponderosa steakhouse occurred, and they were stuck in traffic for hours.
Also, the article is kind of long but a fairly interesting read. Bolded for the teal deer crowd but ... I think the whole thing is worthwhile.

Sometimes a particular combination of headline and author catches your eye and you just know where the article is going to go. So I must admit a certain sense of keen anticipation when I spotted the words ‘We were fools to think the fall of the Berlin Wall had killed off the far Left. They’re back – and attacking us from within’ in conjunction with the name ‘Melanie Phillips’.At first reading, the piece appeared to be a corker, right down to the stab at summarising Gramsci for a Daily Mail audience. Sure, I know that idea sounds counterintuitive, in a ‘Richard Littlejohn outlines his debt to the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr’ or ‘Seumas Milne ponders the downsides of Serbian nationalism’ kind of way, but to my mind that just made it all the better.
So imagine my disappointment, dear reader, when a quick Google revealed that both the underlying thesis – not to mention chunks of text – are simply rehashed from a 2007 piece authored by Linda Kimball on the US far right fringe website American Thinker. It transpires that Ms Phillips may not have read Prison Notebooks after all, and really should cut Kimball in for at least 50% of the presumably not ungenerous fee she got for the feature.
But in District Line terms, the argument advanced by these two women is totally Dagenham, as psychiatrists dub patients who are clearly three stops beyond Barking. If Kimball and Phillips are to be believed, me and my mates are running the world. Yep, the liberal left has only been pretending to be on the back foot for the last three decades, the better to gull the masses.
Thankfully, our heroines have twigged that we have secretly ditched class struggle at the point of production, only to resume it at the level of ideology. Moreover, the tactic has worked brilliantly, and we have virtually succeeded in installing the dictatorship of the politically correctariat.
Our basic problem is that we are ‘hostile towards western civilisation’ and thus seeking to bring it down. We just can’t help hating freedom, thanks to our ‘totalitarian mindset that replicates the way communist societies clamped down on any other than permitted views’. This is tantamount to reconstituted ‘communist ideology’ that is actually worse than full on Stalinism, being ‘even more deadly’ as an ‘active enemy of western freedom.’
Got that, folks? Forget the Red Terror, forced collectivisation, the Great Purge, Hungary 1956, the Cultural Revolution, the suppression of the Prague Spring, and Cambodia in the Year Zero. Political correctness is ‘even more deadly’.

Not even Jerry O'Connell's bare backside could save it.
Despite JOC telling us he was just shooting some "sexy scenes" last night on the set of Eastwick, the news has broken that his wife Rebecca Romijn's series is a goner. ABC has confirmed that no new episodes will be produced beyond the original 13-episode commitment.
So this means Lost is a shoo-in to come back to Wednesday nights, right?
Maybe not.
ABC insiders tell me another series might be headed for that cushy slot, and its star happens to rock a mean Guadalajara poncho...
According to sources, ABC higher-ups are considering moving Ugly Betty to Wednesdays at 10 in January as part of a flashy relaunch of the show in an effort to save it. The thinking is that Betty would complement new hits Modern Family and Cougar Town nicely, and make ABC a solid destination for comedy on Wednesday night.
Nothing has been decided, but I'm told this is one option on the table.
"Honest to god, they haven't given us a date yet," Lost boss Damon Lindelof recently told USA Today. "I don't even know what night it's going to be on. We've been on Wednesday at 9 for a while, but now ABC's comedies are actually working. And I actually like Modern Family and Cougar Town, so I'm not sure that they'll move them."
No word yet on where Lost will go if Betty gets Eastwick's Wednesday slot.
According to insiders, Betty also has a creative resurgence in the works, including an episode in the spirit of Run Lola Run in which Betty must race across town to deliver a diamond-encrusted bra, which sounds pretty exciting. ABC execs asked producers to move the episode up to an earlier date because they liked it so much, according to my mole.
What do you think of Betty taking the Wednesday slot? Where should Lost go? And is it time to stick a fork in Betty, or are you hoping for more?
Source
Totally called it. As a fan of Modern Family (who is is often forced to sit through Cougar Town as well), I've been wanting this to happen. Figured they might as well keep all the comedies on one night. And hey, since NBC gave Leno 10:00, and since Always Sunny's season will be over by then... anybody else open to Lost on Thursdays?
